Could someone please help me with this, or let me know what further
information I need to provide? I should add that if I start up the
laptop without an external display attached, and then try to attach one,
it freezes the whole laptop, necessitating a hard power down (and I
can't ssh to the laptop from another computer on my home network). This
is REALLY annoying, and the kind of thing that makes me have second
thoughts about having switched from windows. For all its faults, at
least windows didn't fully crash when I plugged in an external monitor
(which I do alot with the laptop!).

As a workaround to this problem, I have to fully shutdown the computer,
and then start the computer with whatever external monitor plugged in.
