ok another update. In gnome Alsa Mixer, theer are bunch of checkboxes at the bottom. I unchecked "IEC958 Default PCM and checked one of the two options for IEC958. It seems to mostly eliminate the buzz. I sometimes here it very faintly, and clicking on a level in gnome alsa mixer fixes it, but this is pretty rare now
