I think you’re right.

The error is the same and I think it’s the same cause.

But the consequences are different. If I’ve well understand you’re bug,
after upgrading (in fact, there we have made the same thing), your
computer switch on, but wasn’t able to launch the Xserver... But I think
a terminal was opened ?

In my computer, nothing works. The switching on raise a Kernel Panic and
nothing was launch.

But I think it’s the same cause.

Now, I’ve re-install Ubuntu (Karmic), but with an other version (amd64 and not 
i386).
Now the system works perfectly well. I made a mistake of architecture when 
first installing, but now it works.

I’ve seen in you’re bug that you’re in i386.
Maybe you’re computer is an amd64 ?
In that case, we could focus on that for the bug (?)...
