I'm not really concerned about the headset canceling the speakers, but I
do have that same issue and it may be related to my real issue of audio
being scratchy for some applications.  For example, when I reboot, and I
go to Sound Preferences -> Input, my mic will be detected and if I talk
into it I can see the levels changing to reflect the talking - slightly.
Then, if I start a recording program like Sound Recorder, or if I start
an application like Counterstrike in Wine, the audio gets garbled and
the voice stops working.  The only difference I have from the
instructions above is I was advised to put this line in alsa-base.conf:

options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 power_save_controller=N model=alc883
