Banshee doesn't use media-player-info yet, so that can't work. For RB, I very much suspect that the issue is the wrong path. Can you please have a look into the .m3u file? I suspect it lists the music files without any directory, which means that the .m3u file needs to be in the same directory than the .mp3 files. Can you move it there and see if it works then? This would be a bug in rhythmbox then.
