I have the problem too, on a fresh install of 9.10. It's critical for me
as a teacher because I use the notes function in grading essays.

Deleting the .openoffice.org folder didn't help, although I think just
after deleting it I was able to save a .doc file with notes once or
twice. But the problem returned.

Billjoie's solution works for me -- so many thanks! But it would be much
nicer to be able to use the "ubuntu-ized" version of OO, especially
because it has a more elegant and more convenient way of opening,
finding, and bookmarking files.

I hope this bug is given a high priority.
