I absolutely agree with Max [22]. Moreover I'd slightly modify gksudo and login screen in this way.
My idea is to NOT expose pw length by any stars or whatever. BUT in all the cases sudo, gksudo and login screen show always only one char for indication (asterisk perhaps) which would almost immediately (300ms ?) disappear.
