For your verification, connect an external monitor via Laptop's VGA
connection and turn on, it should display the booting process, then GDM
without problem. AFAIK this is a show stopper for Karmic, most of the
laptops with Intel GMA suffered this problem. It definitely have to be
fixed in Karmic otherwise it is unusable. Disabling KMS using
i915.modeset=0 results very low performance hence is not perferred.
