Chris, thanks! That worked perfectly! Had you not pointed out these
commands, I would have been lost. I was hopelessly trying to chmod the
nvidia xorg.config file, but these two commands fixed the problem
instantly.

Many thanks
Underling

Underling, try running from the command line:

sudo nvidia-xconfig

and then run:

sudo nvidia-settings

You now *should* be able to save your settings.. Let me know if that
works please!

Bug description:
This is a problem with the X-server configuration file that the Nvidia control
panel should save resolution settings to, but cannot overwrite or backup the
related file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf), and thus, when booting the computer for a
fresh run, the resolution is each time reset to 800x600, even though the
monitor can resolve at 1200x800. The issue only happens when the computer is
turned off, then when it is turned back on, the settings have reset and each
time I need to change them back to my preference. I discovered that the problem
originated in the conf file, which even logging into root, and admitting every
sort of permission to the file, I could still not save changes or rewrite the
file.
