I agree with Brett, I've got a similar setup quad core, 8GB 5TB. It seems that for some reason the USB bus resets which causes the remote to stop functioning. lines of reasoning --> because the remote still shows the LED that it receives commandos. The module is not UN-loadable eg hangs. After a reboot everything is functioning fine again.
As I mentioned before, this kind of behavior I never experienced with UBUNTU 7.10 with the same remote. It started with this behavior since UBUNTU 9.04 & 9.10. I can't confirm with 8.04... as my quad-core wasn't recognized then. As for the tip in my last post. Unfortunately no luck... The restart from lircd every minute doesn't work for me. If I use SSH & remote desktop it doesn't change a thing for me.
