The mystery gets even bigger: using a windows machine with X-ming to get a remote session works fine. I have added screenshots from xming.jpg (the greeter as seen from xming, the windows pc itself viewed remotely using vnc) and vnc.jpg (the greeter directly using vnc).
And the mangled kde desktop in vnc-kde-jpg (viewed remote using vnc). Admitted, this suggests a problem in krdc (vnc). However, I can view other servers (debian etc), and as shown windows running a vnc server without problem.
