Thank you for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't know what the output of
amixer means, or how to change any of the settings. Is there a graphical
interface that I can use to set the mixer levels? Most of my experience is
with (shudder) Windows XP. Below is the output from amixer, from a
terminal window with the live CD of Ubuntu 9.10:
