This bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/432492 mentioned reinstalling GDM and this worked for me on the latest Karmic:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm Seems to still come back occasionally though. The problem started after I started working on getting jack & pulseaudio going with a firewire soundcard using some of the ubuntu studio packages. -- There is a problem with the configuration server.
