Before running the installer again, I checked the /boot file system on the USB
stick:
ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo fsck.ext2 /dev/sdc3
e2fsck 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
/dev/sdc3: clean, 53/48576 files, 52351/194048 blocks

I unmounted the /dev/mapper/ubuntu file system. This had been mounted
before because I needed to check that it was the one I actually want to
reformat.

Looks like that did the trick. Maybe the installer could warn if I try
to format a mounted partition.
