Hello, and thank you for reporting this problem.  To start off, system
beeps in gnome has been replaced by system sounds on purpose.  If I
remember correctly, it has to do with some changes in the kernel
inadvertantly causing many system beeps.

As for your sound trouble, could you please specify what sound card you
are using.  Also, could you please install the 'linux-backports-modules-
alsa-karmic-generic' package and reboot.  Keep in mind that you may have
to unmute devices afterwards.  Please let us know how that goes for you.
