Pretty much the same issue here, I only found out the USB mouse worked after trying one that was close by as a trial. I assume if I had a USB keyboard it would work too, but I don't happen to have only handy.
Proposed work-around doesn't work for me since I don't have a mouse typically attached to my computer. My solution currently is never suspend.
