I have the same issue on a dell E1705 laptop. I have modified my /etc/pulse/default.pa and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf files as mentioned in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305889, which improved the audio somewhat. However, I still have this issue. I have attached my configuration and the modified config files.
