Isolate it thus:

1. Turn laptop on.
2. Plug in the power if it is not already plugged in.
3. Hibernate/Sleep the computer.
4. Unplug the computer after hibernate/sleep sequence is complete.
5. Wake back up.
6. ** "Well, there's your problem" ** -- Computer will now go back to 
sleep/hibernation (whichever you had it in)

For me, this has been a reliably reproducible problem. My current (lame)
work-around is to unplug before putting to sleep/hibernation so that the
re-sleep/hibernate does not occur. Gah.. annoying.
