A month later and an (automatic) update to kernel 2.6.31-16-generic: still no progress.
I've tried s2ram, but it doesn't recognize my system. --force is required, but the system hangs after going to a black screen with a flickering cursor on topleft. I tried all the s2ram options as suggested by the opensuse package maintainers, and from a console: same results. (http://en.opensuse.org/S2ram#s2ram_-_Getting_suspend_to_RAM_to_work_out_of_the_box) I seem to be the only one in the WORLD with this problem. grrrr. I haven't had any responses at all. There's reports on Karmic on MBP 3,1 and 4,1, but strangely the 4,1 community is very silent for this particular Karmic distribution. Do I need to wait half a year (10.04) before this problem has disappeared? ps. when starting a kernel with init=/bin/bash the system hangs after displaying the root prompt!
