I had to do a complete re-install of 9.04 after a failed 9.10 install hosed up my box. I did not install the backports modules this time (as I did initial) and I have not had any issues. I have upgrade the kernel once since the re-install and all worked fine. I am wondering if there was a discrepancy with the original install from the OEM I was using.
Regardless, we can mark this one as complete or solved.
