Your proposal is good, but it needs upstream fix to firefox-3.5 to allow "the behaviour to be controlled by a plugin / component". And keep in mind, that I hadn't done any extensive research concerning firefox-3.5 behavior comparing with firefox-3.0, so my proposals about the core of the bug might be wrong.
