xmess seems to be the version created back in 2006. Active development continues. Version 0.130 was available at the start of Ubuntu 9.10 development. Current version is 0.135. xmame suffers from similar issues. 0.106 was the mame version released in 2006. MAME is now up to 0.135. sdlmame at least hails from 2009 with version 0.132.
