Binary package hint: network-manager

when I install ubuntu desktop edition, everything is ok.
However,when I first install ubuntu server edition and then install the virtual 
package"ubuntu-desktop", netwok-manager is not worked. It shows no device is 
managed, and my network is well.

/etc/network/interface file:
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp


I am using Description: 
Ubuntu 9.10,
and network-manager:
  Installed: 0.8~a~git.20091013t193206.679d548-0ubuntu1

  Version table:
