Am also having the same problem. Running up-to-date Karmic. I installed linux-backports-modules-alsa-karmic-generic and rebooted but the mic is still not working.
The audio output is also extremely quiet until I install alsamixer and manually turn up the Master F setting. I also turned the mic gain up to max but this doesn't seem to help.
