It may help others besides me to look at bug #403408, which describes a problem with the grub2 search command when part of the target of the search lies beyond 137.44 GB (128 GiB). A Debian fix is reported to have been released on 2009-12-14 and hopefully will trickle down to us soon. I can confirm that reorganizing partitions to put Karmic wholly below 128 GiB fixes the problem for me.
