I can confirm that changing display resolution seems to be a necessary trigger for the problem -- I'd originally left this detail out of my bug493016 report, but Bryce suggested they might be dups, and this report reminded me I'd tweaked resolution. Again, only one monitor on this ancient box, so 2-display config isn't a necessary trigger.
