Yep...same here, i also removed evolution (because i prefer thunderbird as my default email-client...i also cannot comprehend why canonical dont want thunderbird as default..)and could not close my desktop anymore, so i did a 'hard power off' ...when i restarted my comp, my gnome was gone...i only saw a colored background with nothing on it ...
