adding inhibit=0 (or change it from advanced options in vlc)
killall gnome-power-manager
rm -rf   .gnome2/gnome-power-manager/
rm -rf .gconf/apps/gnome-power-manager/
gnome-power-manager

seems to solve the problem once and for all
