As you may have seen in other bugs, I've been working on rebuilding some packages for those running without pulseaudio: https://launchpad.net/~dtl131/+archive/ppa ALSA users will be interested in the gnome packages. OSS/4 users will also want the canberra packages. NOTE: don't install the portaudio packages right now. I'm still hacking them to get portaudio to work with OSS4.
This command will help you set gstreamer properties: gstreamer-properties Are there other programs in Karmic that are configured at build time to only use pulse? Please let me know.
