I solved this problem. Simply uninstall Pulse audio and life is good. I do not know if the problem in pulse has to do with my using the VGA not the HDMI port on the ATI card, or the fact that my built in motherboard sound was nVidia. I simply know that nothing using pulse worked. Remove pulse and life is good! I can now complete the Eclipse tutorials.
