Are you still facing problems of low volume? Have you tried this in the
latest Ubuntu 9.10 release , Karmic?

More properly sound configuration. The max volume at my computer is not
sufficient. It is significantly lower than on Windows. Many times the sound
simply does not work and I need to reboot.
