I suspect there may be different bugs concerning different people here.
It seems to me at least Anita ought to look at Bug #465317 and Bug
#444518 (possibly duplicates of each other): perhaps one of those
applies more to your case. As for Don's, where hiding/showing the GRUB
menu seems to have an effect, I think it's different from #465317 and
#444518 (and perhaps more in line with this one). I suspect this,
because I'm affected by the xorg-video-intel bug (Solitaire draining
memory and X crashing as result), and my system has had the GRUB menu
showing since installation day. Ie. having the menu show doesn't prevent
the crash.
