Public bug reported:

What I did: Install Feisty Fawn herd3 desktop, update and upgrade
everything. I specifically did NOT install fglrx since the Free driver
works quite well. I did tune up my xorg.conf (like setting the agp to 4x
etc.). I also installed beryl, but I don't run it except just to show
off smugly to the windows folk.

Direct renering works well (get around 2100fps in glxgears). The problem
is that everything (and especially firefox) is very slow to load and is
very unresponsive, especially while loading. I'm comparing the load
speed to how Feisty was just a few days ago. Programs don't respond to
mouse inputs until often up to a half a minute or more. One example I
can give is changing between tabs in firefox takes 10-20 seconds, I
cannot create a new tab while a webpage is loading and each page (even
google.com) takes ages to appear. Swapping between workspaces can takes
from 30 sec up to a minute which is unbearable. This problem is also
apparent in mozilla thunderbird. Clicking on a subfolder just takes
forever. Even the mousepointer stops responding often when firefox is
loading and it has never done that before. I tried booting slightly
older kernel version, but to no avail. Since this problem is with the
whole gnome desktop is simply makes ubuntu unusable for the time being.
I had to boot into WINDOWS!

I will post my xorg.conf. That is the only thing that I have played with
to any serious extend since I installed. Mostly for fun. I will try to
comment out those changes I made and see if it makes a difference.

Cheers.
