Running gparted from the karmic-live release cd, it recognizes the drives
(albeit with different "letters" (eg: sda vs sdc)) and presents a little
warning triangle, which, when double clicked says:
--
e2label: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sda1
Couldn't find a valid filesystem superblock.

Couldn't find a valid filesystem superblock.

dumpe2fs 1.41.9 (22-Aug-2009)
dumpe2fs: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/
sda1

Unable to read contests of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable
--
Other partitions report similarly.

Trying to raw mount the partition fails, not unexpectedly:
---
r...@ubuntu:/# mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/f
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist
---
Reviewing the jaunty attachments to see if there's appreciable difference vs
the karmic output.
