Thanks very much for the details waverider! I think this is what I need to do. I just tried this though and I get a message saying:
"(process:6975):GTK-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale. "(gedit:6795):GTK-WARNING**: Cannot open display" I tried this with nano as well but no luck either.
