Urgh, a new kernel can sometimes take very long to get into the official Ubuntu repositories. Although I wonder if the problem with AR928X adapters not being able to conduct regular wireless activity and scanning for new networks concurrently is a driver issue or the adapter's inherent fault. I'll switch into Vista in a moment to download something and then do a refresh of the wireless network listing to see if it exhibits the same behaviour.
