I am having this same issue with a Kodak C180 on Ubuntu 9.10. I get the
"Error initializing camera: -60: Could not lock the device" message when
connecting the camera. I get unable to connect to device type of errors
from both F-spot as well as Digikam.

I tried the reported workaround of killing the gvfs-gphoto2-volume-
monitor process, but now I do not get the camera able to mount at all.

Am looking for a viable patch, a fallback option, or true working
workaround option as this all worked fine for me under Ubuntu 9.04
