I can confirm that it happens only when in low graphic mode. I rebooted and as so often happens, Lucid booted in low graphic mode. I suspended the laptop, and woke it some seconds later. The same glossy black display with a blinking cursor was all I could see.
Again, pressing ctrl+alt+F2 caused a reddish horizontal bar flash and then I could reboot with ctrl+alt+delete. When I was eventually able to boot in normal graphic mode, suspending and waking was not an issue.
