I used to have what appeared like a freeze on a 1GB RAM netbook without
a SWAP partition. The problem was not a lock up, but a freeze that only
lasted while foxmarks (now xmarks) was syncing.

One solution was to set xmarks to only sync manually. The other
solution was to set up a swap partition on an SD card (The netbook in
question only uses SSD drives. I did not want all of the gratuitous
writes to SWAP shortening the life of the SSD. The SD card is cheap to
replace when it starts to fail from overuse.)
