Thank you for taking the time to report this problem and help to improve
Ubuntu.
I see that this system was originally installed as Ubuntu 9.10. Ubuntu
9.10 installs grub-pc (grub2) by default, but these messages come from
grub (grub1). Do you recall having installed the 'grub' package by
hand, or a package that depends on it such as 'grub-choose-default'?
Running 'sudo apt-get install grub-pc' should be sufficient to reinstall
grub2 and resolve this error for you.
