To report further, the system worked well for a few days and froze once again. After that it performed without a hitch for a few more days but today, while in the process of selecting applications for installation in Synaptic, it froze and the screen turned to black and white stripes.
Again, the system turned unresponsive and could not even be connected to from another computer via ssh.
