As the original poster of this bug, I would like to say that it has
grown into a list of issues. The original issue which was reported of
"Not able to create a bootable USB key using Ubuntu 9.10" in Karmic
Alpha with the the error "This program needs HAL running in order to
properly function" have been fixed, therefore I am marking this bug as
Fix Released.

However many valid points were made since then, and it would be a shame
to loose all these unresolved issues; So I have done my best to separate
the valid issues into bugs that exist and new bugs.

@Fabián Rodríguez (Bug control) Feel free to go through the individual
bugs below and triage them or mark their importance, as you have done
with this bug. Thank you.

Bug A) Opening usb-creator then plugging in a disk brings up the error dialog
"Unable to mount X.XGB Filesystem. A job is pending on /dev/sdX#"
Answer A) usb-creator needs tighter integration into the desktop for
mounting/unmounting devices. Expecting tight integration with the desktop. Not
as many errors when mounting/ejecting. Bug #506577 was created for this error.

Bug B) Format button is viewable, even when no disks are available, selected.
This also affects drives with pending error messages.
Answer B) Format should be greyed out when a disk is unavailable or has an
error. Please see Bug #501057 reported by Thijs to discuss this issue further.

Bug C) Both the device and the partition path are displayed.
Answer C) In some usecases the device needs to be displayed, for example Mobile
team writes .img directly on the device - no partition. For others (the
majority of ubuntu desktop users) displaying both (/dev/sdb and /dev/sdb1) is
confusing and unnecessary. Talk needs to happen with design team to have the
corner case not affect all users who are used to an abstraction (such as
"Kingston USB Key"). Bug #506586 was created for this issue.

Bug D) Format does not work in many cases. An external program must be used to
re-format the disk.
Answer D) Formatting needs to wipe the drive completely (use a different tool)
and always format to FAT32 in the same manner. FAT16 should not be accepted for
reasons of compatibility and filesystem limitations. See Bug #296160 reported
by Zerocool3001 to discuss this issue further.

Bug E) DBus error: unable to mount <disk_label>
org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.NotFound
Answer E) usb-creator needs tighter integration into the desktop for
mounting/unmounting devices. Users will expecting tight integration with the
desktop and not as many errors when mounting/ejecting when it comes to Lucid
LTS. See Bug #458334 reported by mdz for further discussion on this error.
