I am using pidgin 2.6.5 on Karmic and it still does not work. I believe it has something to do with a corporate firewall because if I proxy it through a machine outside of my corporate firewall, it works fine. The real Yahoo client however works fine from behind the firewall. There must be something that Yahoo's client is doing that Pidgin is not.
