@Per Ångström: I think they are related, because if you enter the
username correctly the first time, you can shut down the machine; only
if you enter a wrong password (before entering a correct password)
ubuntu won't shut down.

@Kai Jauch:You could be correct: I click the username enter the wrong
password --> authentication failure; I click the username again --> gdm
restarts.
