I've now tried installing usb-modeswitch. Both with without and with the
--huawei-mode modification it fails to solve the problem.

I occasionally try to persuade colleagues to shift to Ubuntu. Situations
like this - where most of the mobile broadband devices in use are
disabled for months and the Ubuntu people don;t see this as any sort of
a problem at all - make me despair. No wonder we still have bug #1.
