Public bug reported:

Something has changed which makes it impossible to change correctly
between different external screens.

If I boot without any external screen and then connect one, it is
recognised correctly. (In fact, it's switched on as soon as I select the
screen setting dialogue, and the window for the setting appears in the
new screen, which is not so good, in case there is something wrong with
the screen itself.) If I switch off the external screen and re-enter the
screen dialogue I only see the laptop screen, which is fine. However, if
I then connect a different external screen it seems to be identified as
the first screen I connected, and the available resolutions are not
correct. xrandr gives the same result. I also see many errors in syslog
saying "unable to read EDID block" and "no EDID data".

Switching from kernel 2.6.31-17 to 2-6-28-17 the touchpad does not work.
However, I can log in and use the stylus for input (tablet pc). In this
case, the external screens are identified correctly if I switch between
them. So it seems my hardware works OK. (Perhaps I have some odd
setting. I recently ran scratchbox and Xephyr for the first time, and I
had to explicitly specify the DISPLAY to bluetooth-applet since no
applet appeared on the screen. However, I didn't willingly change any
settings for X and the desktop, and bluteooth-applet works fine now
without any intervention.)

I tried following the command specified just below this form to report
this bug (which I noticed just as I was about to submit), i.e. ubuntu-
bug -p xserver-xorg-core. However ubuntu-bug it tells me that the
commands -p/-P are deprecated, so I'll just submit, hoping the
automatically collected information will suffice.
