There is no need to compile the code yourself, as mentioned in a previous comment, there a PPA with the fix, https://launchpad.net /~network-manager/+archive/trunk. If you add it, you will get more recent packages with this fix already applied.
But I do agree with this being a very annoying problem, specially when at your workplace the Wifi network is hidden.
