I'm now quite convinced that these horrible crashes were the result of the swap partition becoming unstuck. Computer performance had been slow and error prone, then I noticed my swap partition wasn't being used. Even after using mkswap the correct links weren't made in /dev/disk/by-uuid, after I made my own symlinks and altered fstab my swap partition seems to remain intacked after reboot/hibernate. Since then I haven't experience this same crash, but if I do I'll do my best to get the debugging on here.
