Could you please check if you have the swap partition configured correctly. You can check this under System-->Administration-->System Monitor, and check the Resources tab and see what values it shows for Used Swap. Otherwise in a terminal run the command: swapon -s Also during the period of high CPU usage does the computer have increased RAM usage or use the swap?
