My father's computer is also affected by this. However none of mine are! His is a 32-bit machine running karmic, I tested on my 64-bit machine running karmic (Ubuntu Studio) and I could open the file he has a problem with. So I thought maybe it was a problem with 32-bit but I can also open it on my 32-bit netbook-remix eeePC, also karmic.
Tried reinstalling OpenOffice, did not help. Tried creating a new user account on my dad's computer, in case it was an issue with dotfiles, but this did not help either.
